*This scholarship is still been created and this post gathers information regarding the functioning and primary aims of this scholarship*
The aim of the Zakuroguchi scholarship is to allow young students to spend a period of one month studying and discovering Japan. The perfect candidate for this scholarship would be someone who has not yet started university but who has a deep interest in Japan, and it would allow this person to delve into Japanese culture and be inspired by it, to then hopefully consider Japanese as a subject to take up at university level.
This scholarship also aims at helping someone from a disadvantaged background, who would otherwise not be able to go to Japan or leave their country of origin in the first place.
It would ideally include Japanese some Japanese lessons when in Japan to get a wider understanding into Japanese society through language acquisition, and travelling also to non-touristic places, for a deep understanding of Japanese traditional as well as contemporary culture.
This scholarship is generously funded by the Hitotsubu Channel community as well as language schools in Tokyo.
Aim to get it started by spring 2024
Estimation of costs:
flight cost (1500 GBP, but might depend on origin of pupil)
organization costs, including having to travel to a place to help out the candidate with the application process/ accompanying the applicant (1000 GBP)
expenses in Japan (food, accommodation, travel expenses (1200 GBP)
Japanese lessons in loco (free if subsidised by language school)
Total 3700 GBP for one person.
